When I was a kid I used to love to look through that shimmer on a hot day as the sun baked the road on the top of the hill; through the rippled glass of our kitchen window onto the green world around me. That world came from the ground up. Blue and green glass bottles we found buried in the backyard, we put up to the light on the window sill. It was proof of something magic, solid one moment and then breathing the next. Both worlds, there for the taking, just by looking.

It's not all dark, but there are a lot of endings in STORIES — a lot of good-byes to a time once solid, now shimmering up in the light even as it disappears.

Stories
Music and lyrics by Jane St. Clair

You could talk me into sleep
once upon a time
with stories all your own
You'd conjure every voice:
Heroes, kings and horses' hooves
from here to kingdom come
See them all in the night sky
Faces clear as the light
as you'd draw them from thin air
before I'd say my prayers
Now I'm fighting sleep again
trying hard to find
some stories of my own
For all you've given me:
a world of dreams made clear
I still can't see this world in time
this world without you here
Still I look to the night sky
as it fades into light
Try and outlast this last time
before you say goodnight
So many ways now to pray
Let the book open up where it may
It's the father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom
And this is what you have always tried to do
And you will fight this sleep again
and you will savor time
until the time has come
You tell me it's not sad
You don't see it that way
Great adventure lies ahead
Your voice is unafraid
And when I look to the night sky
When my dreams come to light
They'll be shaped by your story
Each story a key
Your keys to my kingdom come

Black Holes
Music and lyrics by Jane St. Clair

Black holes take the universe
one star at a time
one way through a wilderness
and nobody can tell you
where the night will take you
But you know when I disappear
You see through my eyes
the braille halls
and the black relief
of stories made for strong wind
doorways I can stand in
In hiding, I cover up in silence
What you see, I've buried out of sight
But you find
the part of me
that's reaching
for light

Black holes take the universe
one star at a time
Trap doors or a spiral pass
through a time we once knew
how to tell or speak to?
And you've lived through a wilderness
of warfare at a time
when children should be fast asleep
and nobody can tell you
what the night has taught you
When you're hiding
from sleep with smoke
and warm light
I see the child you had to hide
turning
to face the ghosts
and waiting
for light

Can I come and hold you?
I just want to give you
all the love that's in me tonight

Black holes take the universe
one star at a time
one way through a wilderness
and nobody can tell you
where the night will leave you
The black hole
of this time we're in
will suitcase every night
when mad dogs
break Pandora's box
open in the strong wind
riptide the beginning
of calling
for everything remembered
falling
through fear that calls for flight
returning
a broken seed
that breaks ground
for light

Can I come and hold you
Can you come and give me
all the love I've needed
safe from walls and reason
Hold me as we pass through
this dark night

Shower Into Gray
In memory of all those lost in the Twin Towers
who, given no choice at all, chose to fall.
Music by Ken Lasaine & Jane St. Clair
Lyrics by Jane St. Clair

Ash will fall upon us all
and now I am returning
Too soon this bright blue morning
will shower into gray
So keep our promise made to flight
Shoulder in where wings belong
You and I are bird and sky
And know I am not gone

See we've defied this tightrope time before
High above the heads
of those afraid to fall
Fall and sail a lifetime
every night

in answer to your call

Ash will fall upon us all
But you taught me to fly
So I will be sigh to rise
above this storm of gray
Dissolve the pinioned calls
where none of us remain
And I will be the sigh to rise
between this land and sky

And we'll defy this time once more
calm the broken cries
of those afraid to fall

I will sail a lifetime
every night
in answer to your call

So keep our promise made to flight
Shoulder in where wings belong

You and I are bird and sky
And know I am not gone
Know I am not gone
No, I am not gone
Know I am not gone
